Hi,

We just took our 2015 NX200t AWD to Tahoe over the break and as soon as we encountered a little bit snow and the slightest ice a message appeared:

"AWD system has overheated - switching to 2WD"

Continued to drive in 2WD up until we reached the cabin.
Parked the car in the garage over night.

Backed out of garage in morning on to the main road, the temp was about 5 F. After 10s a new message appeared:

"AWD system Malfunction - 2wd mode engaged"

Then we got stuck on the road - only front wheels spinning. Then we started sliding backward into ditch.

Very disappointed.:(

Dealer took a look at it after we got back to the Bay Area. Cleared the codes and said it passed all tests. I.e. no repair. Sigh.

Don't want to take it up in the snow anymore. Useless.

Still working with the dealer for some sort of resolution.

I just encountered the same problem with my 2015 NX200t AWD last night. There was a bad traffic on the high way last night. When I almost passed the traffic jam, the engine check light suddenly went on. It gave me an error message as "AWD system Malfunction - 2wd mode engaged". So I drove my car off the high way and parked it in front of a store. I turned the engine off and back on. The message did not go away. Then I drove it in a low speed back to home. I felt there was something wrong with the drive train or transmission or differential because the acceleration does not function well. I could not accelerate it up to 50 miles. I will drive my car to the dealer to check it out. Very frustrated.................

AWD system malfunction

Why all the AWD system malfunctions? I was leaving for a doctors appointment and my 2016 Lexus won't start. Same message. AWD system malfunction and 2WD engaged. Car won't start. I'm curious if this is a system error due to a problem beyond our control. Seems like it might be a factory issue. Anyone else? I have Lexus roadside assistance on their way now. They think its a battery problem. Everything lights up, radio works, all lights are bright and not flickering or dimming. I'll be shocked if that's the problem.

So I will answer my own question above. It was the battery. Even though nothing was left running the battery was low enough that it would not start the car. All those messages and malfunctions were due to the battery. Lexus Road Service brought a new battery and said this is very common with factory batteries. I think they should do something about that then, don't you? I was so glad I was home and not on the road.

Hi there, wondering if the problem was fixed after the battery was changed?
I have the same currently, I changed the battery but my car slides on the snow, so I think I have still the same issue, even though warning is not showing on the dash.

Thanks for sharing,

My nx200t died when approaching my house. The engine showed AWD malfunction, engine performance has been reduced, visit dealer. The engine light was on. Car would start but with no power.... It stalled 4 times before j got home.

Plugged in my OBD Scanner and it seems to be fuel pump failure. Did a quick Google search and Toyota recalled over 3 million cars including some Lexus NX for fuel pump failure which would either, not start the car at all, stall the car while in motion, reduce engine power, any issue the vehicle will disable AWD. I'm surprised my 2016 nx was never recalled... Towed it to Lexus dealer yesterday and waiting to see the outcome.

Quite dangerous as I just came off a 50km highway drive....in the middle of the night in bloody South Africa.... If the car stalled I would have been robbed.... Or killed....

So much so for Lexus reliability.... But then again I've never experienced a single issue with this car for the past 6 years almost at 150k km,only had 2 battery replacement. My 2016 Volvo xc90 D5 on the other hand had replacement on.... Alternator, engine mount, both twin turbo, EGR, torque rod.... List so long... I think almost Half the engine compartment was replaced under warranty...

Anyways, all my dudes with NX , watch out for that fuel pump issue....I would change it out in next big service....

My NX200t just got services a month ago with the battery, spark plugs replaced. I had the 95000K service done at the same time. The light just came on yesterday morning. My care is drivable, I plan to go to the dealer in the morning to get this resolved by get them to provide new battery on their dime and to ask why there is no engineering notice issued by Lexus about the recurring issue for drivers globally.
Keep you posted on my adventures to the "DEALERSHIP".

Why hasn't anyone stated if the dealer fixed it and estimated costs?

Was the problem resolved simply from disconnecting the battery or was that just a temporary reset of the indicator? Ie did the problem arise again? Why would a simple battery disconnect resolve an issue like that?

I have this error message from my 2016 NX200T - I've researched and spoken to the dealership. The suspicion was a low voltage battery so I've had that changed today at a local garage with a memory saver. However the error messages are still on the dashboard. Is this simply a system reset required as I'm still a long way off my next service so don't want to chase in?

I am aware this is an old thread but thanks to the hint about the battery in this post, I was able to fix my issue.

Symptom: AWD System Malfunction - 2WD Mode Engaged Error.
Cause: Inadvertently attempted to start the car with one coil unplugged after replacing the spark plugs.
Solution: 1) Connected the spark plug coil. 2) Unplugged the battery for a couple of minutes and plug it back in. The error code went away.

Having this same issue in my 2017 nx200t except today it’s in limp mode. Showing AWD System Malfunction, Reduced Engine Power, Traction Control Turned Off, Visit Your Dealership codes and audible dinging noise constantly. Chugging like it can’t get air and black exhaust started coming out when I first started it. It was running so loud and then felt a release like it shifted down and the smoke went away. Hardly any power or speed when driving and it shakes back and forth. Just replaced the battery, had an oil change, drained the excess power from the computer and dealership scanned it with no answers. It’s 70 degrees out so it’s not weather related. 132k miles on it. Any one else have this issue or has a resolution been found?

Same problem. In my case temperature outside dropped prior to the problem. Read here about batteries, disconnected it, connected latter in the day - problem is gone. Assuming that's a dying battery which reacts to lower temperature.

I had the same thing happen this morning - and it was the first cold morning of the season. It turned out that my gas cap wasn't on tight enough and it caused pressure in the gas tank that set off the error code. Before you replace a battery or go to the dealership, check your gas cap. It was $85 to find out that my gas cap wasn't tight enough. I've been driving for 40 years and have never had that happen. I've been driving my lexus for 6 years and this is the first time.

We do NOT have a factory battery. It's an Interstate battery which I always stand by. Its less than 1 year old. The same error occurred but DID disconnect the batter - for over 2 hours because people have said that it needs to reset itself", which I this is BS. Any I did it and the error just came back about 3 weeks later. Did anyone ever get this resolved or is it a recall item? Software update? If software, what was it? Thx all.

Lexus replaced my timing belt. Since then, I have been getting this error message on repeat, AWD System Malfuncion, 2WD Engaged. Contact Dealer. Read lots of threads, Tighten Gas Cap. Clean Battery Terminals. Check fuses. Check spark plug connections. Check hose connections, clean fuel injectors. Replace the four Speed Sensors on the wheels. Replace Fuel Injectors. I am pretty sure the default error message is to always be AWD System Malfuncion, 2WD Engaged. Contact Dealer.. If you read the internet, this has been going on since 2017 with Toyotas and Lexus. No firm solution. I just went and took my car back from Lexus, I am not pumping more money into something that seems to be just a dog chasing its tail. Lexus wanted $5600 to replace my fuel injectors. Four weeks ago they elceaned my fuel injectros for $500. Four days later the message is back, they say they forgot to tighten a hose connection leading to not enough air getting in for combustion.

Toyota/Lexus has no idea what causes this.
I cleaned the battery terminal way back when and the problem went away for a day, but came back.
Currently, I am putting in the highest octane gas into my Lexus RX350, no ethanol. I have not had the light come on.
If the Lexus mechanic is blaming the fuel injectors, then I will put in the best gas I can. Going on 6 weeks with no messages.

OMG ... this is the dumbest thread of non-car people steering other non-car people down a false rabbit hole. On an AWD vehicle (especially one without good winter/all-season tires...like someone from the Bay Area going to Tahoe) when one of the wheels spins abnormally more than the others, it, it can trick the vehicle into thinking you broke something (transfer case, differential etc.) ...so for your "safety" it goes into "Reduced Engine Power" mode (also referred to as "limp mode"). When the computer is reset, the car takes itself out of Reduced Engine Power mode until it sees the issue again. The dealerships can't find anything wrong with your cars because there is nothing wrong with the car. The situation remedied itself in your car ticket self out of reduced engine power mode. The reason why resetting batteries and unplugging and plugging things back in seem to fix your problem is simply because you resetting the computer (OBDII ECU). So more than likely the original poster had heavy slippage of a single tire in the snow that threw the code. If they would have turned off the car, opened the door, closed the door, waited 10 min ( how to reset/cycle off the ECU) the issue would have gone away. My girlfriend has a Lexus NX200 and she backs out of a steep driveway way too fast and makes one of the tires spin while it's elevated off the ground. This makes her Lexus throw the same code. I reset the computer and she's good to go. I've also taught her how to cycle off the ECU in case she does this again. The vehicle is fine.

Same issues. After BOTH fuel pumps, injectors, oil leak on sensors, and spark plugs replaced, same thing happened just while parked in front of work. Battery was replaced last year. Runs but hesitates. Wouldn’t dare pull out quickly in traffic or try to pass someone because it acts as though it wants to go in limp mode like it did before I got the $7k in repairs done.
and how does opening and closing the door reset a computer?? I open and close it every time I get to where I’m going and still the errors, rough start and hesitancies when I restart.
