Tokuo Fukuichi, Toyota's global design chief, was promoted to head the company's Lexus division. Despite the promotion, Fukuichi will retain his responsibilities as chief officer of design for all of Toyota's automotive brands.
Fukuichi is known for taking design risks and encouraging experimentation with new concepts.
"Toyota's problem was that it had too many filters," Fukuichi said in 2012 after the company began to change its design approach, reducing the number of executives involved in design review. "When you have that many people weighing in, you end up developing cars by eliminating the negatives, not by creating something positive, by taking risks."
Toyota Motors CEO Akio Toyoda has called for the design team to bring more character to future Toyota and Lexus vehicles. He wants the brands to be seen as a leader rather than a follower.
