No plans for a CLA-fighting Lexus

Many have speculated that Lexus might follow in the footsteps of Mercedes-Benz and Audi by creating a sub-$30,000 sedan. Such a vehicle would compete with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz CLA and the Audi A3 Sedan.

Lexus has said that it has no plans for a vehicle like this though. Mark Templin, executive vice president of Lexus, says that they may offer a car under $30,000, but it wouldn't be a Lexus, it would be a Toyota. Templin says that what the Germans are doing is not luxury, and other publications like Consumer Reports and USA Today agree with these sentiments.

So at least we know that Lexus isn't going to be joining this race to the bottom.

Lexus does most of its business above $50K regardless. Plus Lexus has the Luxury of not needing to support itself like BMW and Mercedes. They are essentially one brand operations, Mercedes does get a boost from its commercial applications, but in no way the type of aid Lexus gets from Toyota...
I actually wouldn't mind seeing a coupe styled sedan from Lexus, one in a much higher segment and a lower one.
Its just a swipe taken at the big three, lexus is hoping to stake out the strategic high ground. By saying we won't go down "there" and drawing a $30,000 line in the sand (anything to the left is not, anything to the right is luxury) they are hoping to differentiate. Perhaps its part of a large scale push to boost global relevance for a brand that is really only successful in the US?
It may also be their way to secure the company and brand to not thin themselves out too much.

Maybe instead they will make the IS available in more places than it previously was?

Still, i was looking forward to seeing some smaller and cheaper Lexus, maybe it's good they don't want to go this route.

Its also possible they leave that lifting in the US to the IS, say the IS200? Its been trademarket already and its expected to use the NX's Turbo 4... so they can get to $30K like that and still offer more car and RWD which neither A3 or CLA can...
