Cargo Capacity

Hi everyone!

I'm in the market for a new SUV and the Lexus NX has caught my interest. I took one for a test drive a couple weekends ago and really liked the ride. However, my one concern is in the cargo space, it looked to be fairly small. I routinely take trips with my family where golf clubs and several suitcases (as well as miscellaneous junk) are needed and I'm not confident this will all fit in the trunk.

What is your experience with this?

Take your golf clubs and luggage to the dealership and see how it fits. I think it is a valid car test.

Good advice.
Another way is to make some measurements of your golf clubs and luggage and then measure the cargo space.

If you travel with only one passenger aside from yourself, i think with the rear seats folded down will provide adequate space.
Thank you both, that is a good idea and I will most likely do that. I actually live close to the dealer and they let us go out on our own so may even swing it by my house to do a "sample load". Yes, aware of the fold down but would be needed during family trips.

However, I'm also interested in some personal impressions on the capacity and personal experiences.

It's great you have a dealer like that which will let you take a vehicle out on your own.
I know some even let customers take vehicles for the whole day and experience it throughout their average day.
Does anyone know the dimensions of the cargo space? Or is willing to take measurements and post them up? I'm curious to know because the dealer in my area has none in stock so it would be quite hard to do a test with gear etc..
I cannot put golf bag sideway in my NX but on a diagonal way, its OK and still have room for 4 wheels cart

Mu bag is fairly large, by the way
Brochure says 17.66 cu. ft.
With rear seat folded it is 54.56 cu. ft.

The cargo space is something to be mindful of, but I don't think that the NX has much less cargo space than comparable vehicles. If you really feel like having more cargo space then you should consider the RX. Is that the alternative for you?

There we go.

I doubt it's going to be common for NX owners to have an NX full of passengers and a maxed out cargo space with more things to move in, if that will be the case often enough investing in a top box should be on your list.

Here is what I have measured at a car show:
Distance between wheel wells: 43"
Max. width aft of wheel wells: 53"
Flat depth behind rear seats to cargo door latch trim plate: 36" max
Diagonal length, from rear of driver's B pillar to above mentioned trim plate: 84" approx. (think skis placed diagonal with rear seats folded)
Distance from rear of B pillar to above mentioned trim plate: 71" max approx.
I'm surprised that dealer didn't have these measurements. Shouldn't that be info they have. Its part of a detailed spec sheet.

As a golfer, stowing golf bags was important to me in any vehicle I was to purchase.

In investigating the NX the first photo was shown in one of the NX videos I saw, It shows 4 cart bags horizontally.

The second photo shows the cargo space dimensions as measured by Corrado in another forum.

The third photo shows my NX with a cart bag horizontally in the back by the seats. Because of the wheel well bumps I had to remove the driver. I think the other bags can retain the driver and still be horizontal. like the first photo. I will try to post in a following post.

I hope this helps all the golfers out there.

That's a great example of how much space we have to work with, there's even more space to go on the sides.
Was there anything wider you ever tried to fit in the back of your NX?

Cargo approximately 28 cu ft, not 17.7

@roho, here are a few others I've taken to not only show the cargo's capacity, but that the numbers prove to be 28 cu Ft, not 17.7. :)
@mister, to your point, the NX's cargo is comparable to the core competition which ranges between 25 and 31 cu ft.

Those pictures are amazing. They show us how much cargo space the NX has and also what exactly you can fit in there. Looks like it is substantial enough to meet most people's needs. Is anyone worried there isn't enough cargo space?
Another good way to test is stopping by costco, grabbing bundles of toilet paper rolls and stuffing them in the back. I see automotive publications doing this.
@mister @David.

Agree on the cargo capacity being very good especially in this class. It's been one of my pet peeves that Lexus USA and Canada have published the European cargo measurement which goes up to the rigid tonneau cover, instead of up to the ceiling like all the competitors do in N.America. Needless to say, I got Lexus' attention with the analysis and pics - they are looking into it and fingers crossed. My hope is it's corrected for the '16 NX brochures and other printed materials and hopefully prior for electronic print since people who paper shop and see the 17.6 cu ft cargo capacity may immediately skip considering the NX and move onto the next vehicle.

For more perspective as to how illogical 17 cu ft is, the NX has the same cargo as the 16.6 cu ft Fit (which is measured to the ceiling)??? :)

I found this on cargo volume.

Bottom line, use published data as a guide but bring your tape measure and common sense if cargo volume is important to you.

Great find.

That is indeed what it all comes down to, quite simple.

Factoring in ease of loading might be important to some folks, another thing to be looked at.
