Anyone else considering the Land Rover Discovery Sport?

Never ever consider buying a Land Rover...consistently the worst car maker in ANY quality survey that you can think of! "If it ain't leaking, then it ain't working!" as the saying goes.

BTW, this comes from my brother's personal experience of owning one...horrible!

I considered purchasing a Range Rover Evoque Dynamic Coupe but the MSRP was about $58,000 which is pretty expensive for a 2.0L 4 cylinder turbo. If you wanted different wheels, black package, different color exterior and/or roof it would be around another $4,500. It drove nice and handled well with the adaptive drive option. I would take the Evoque over the NX if they cost the same. Closest dealer is about 90 minutes away so it could be an issue for service. I read about the Land Rover Discovery Sport but haven't seen one in person yet.

I question the objectivity of this comparison. The UK is known to not like Lexus nearly as much as Japan and NA, so I think there is a little bias in there.

For example, Lexus always does really well (1st place) in quality and reliability rankings yet in that section What Car? gives the Lexus the worst rating at 3/5. This rating was given without them having data on the NX, and simply inferring from the rest of the lineup. That doesn't make much sense since Lexus always does so well though.

I'm skeptical.

Remember, this survey takes into account 3 years of ownership...so, this is a very reliable survey unlike those "initial quality" crap surveys.

I also included the 2013 survey of same type...just to make sure no one thinks that it is a fluke!

I traded in my '03 Discovery on the NX 2 weeks ago. I would NEVER buy another LR; clunky, gas-guzzling (10 MPG!) and terribly expensive to fix.

To be fair, this new Discovery Sport is entirely unlike the old Discovery. This new model is fuel-efficient, with more nimble modern underpinnings. So it has my attention.

I'm sure it's still terribly expensive to fix though, which gives me pause!!!

I'm also looking at the Discovery Sport. I sat in two different pre-production static models at different events. A big unknown is reliability. Another question mark for me is the driver's seat position. The last model I sat in, I noticed that my left thigh rubbed the hard seat frame housing (below the seat cushion) when I exited the vehicle. I noticed the seat frame housing was much wider than the seat cushion. I tried to adjust the seat height but couldn't because the battery needed recharging. The dealer gave me a feeling that they will not get many Discovery Sports the first year, so testing one before ordering may not be an option.

If they were simply inferring from the rest of the lineup like you say then they would of inferred number 1, they do point out that RX does fair better than big Disco.

The NX and Discovery Sport were too new to be included in the most recent JD Power ownership satisfaction survey, but the reliability performance of other SUVs from the two brands are roughly on a par, with the full-size Discovery suffering slightly fewer faults than the Lexus RX.

They make their point of contention well known...

On one hand, the Lexus’s interior feels well built, with tight and consistent panel gaps, solid-feeling switches and a variety of textures that make it look suitably smart. However, it’s let down by exposed bolt heads on the centre console, and cheap-feeling material surrounding the buttons on the steering wheel.

Every single comparison you will come across will have inherant bias' of the writer baked in...

When it comes to a brand like Land Rover, as much as that concern may be obvious to some people, being a premium brand and having the status that comes with owning one I bet it's what gets people to look a bit past possible issues that may come up with a vehicle as new as the disco is.

I don't have figures but ostensibly I would say the reason reliability is not a large factor for LR is that a bulk of their business is leases. JLG vehicles are great so long as you have warranty

That's what it's more about.
Same goes for european vehicles.

I assume that JLR tries to make their cars work properly, and it may not even be a problem with JLR so much as it is a strength of Lexus.
