The newest addition to the Lexus family has been officially revealed.
Say hello to the Lexus NX crossover, the real-world version of the LF-NX concept that debuted at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. The latest model to join the growing Lexus family of vehicles will make its official debut at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show, but AutoGuide had a chance to get up-close and personal with the NX ahead of time. Set to compete with other premium compact crossovers such as the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and the upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, the Lexus NX joins a growing segment that is likely to see even more competition in the coming years.
Compared to the LF-NX concept, the production NX has been toned down significantly, which was expected given how wild the LF-NX concept was. It is, however, still aggressive-looking for a crossover sporting the brand’s signature spindle grille, IS-inspired headlights and matte silver accents.
The entry into the luxury compact crossover segment will be available with three powertrains: a gasoline turbocharged NX 200t, a naturally aspirated NX 200 and a hybrid NX 300h. In addition, those looking for a sportier crossover can opt for the NX 200t F Sport (pictured).
The North American market will be spared the NX 200, as it’s expected that the power output won’t satisfy U.S. drivers. Instead, the base model available will be the NX 200t that is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with the choice of front or all-wheel drive. Unfortunately, exact specifications haven’t been released yet on the NX 200t, but a Lexus spokesman estimates that power output will be around 220 to 230 hp.
As for the NX 300h, expect it to make use of the same 2.5-liter 4-cylinder hybrid as found in the ES 300h, making roughly 200 hp and achieving an average of 40 MPG.
According to the Japanese automaker, the NX was “developed to have more agility than a SUV plus a bold, eye-catching exterior with its low profile and unique roofline.” The crossover will come standard with 17-inch wheels, though 18-inch rollers will be available as an option. Subtle luxury details on the exterior include the innovative Lexus-first door handle with a hidden key barrel and integrated lighting.

What’s inside is what counts and the NX’s cabin doesn’t disappoint. The standard luxury amenities you would expect in a Lexus product are all on point in the NX. This is also the first model from the automaker to feature the brand’s Lexus Remote Touch Interface with a touch pad. There is also an available comprehensive Multi-Information Display that includes a Lexus-first G sensor and boost meter, a heads-up display, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Finally, the NX will even offer a wireless charging tray for your electronic devices.
Positioned below the popular Lexus RX SUV, the NX will be a fierce competitor in the compact crossover segment given the company’s prowess in the automotive market. Expect more details on the powertrains as well as pricing and availability closer to the vehicle’s launch.
