The NX and its "Active Sound Control" knob

Did you know that the Lexus NX has a little knob labeled ASC, or "Active Sound Control." In Sport mode this knob apparently tightness suspension and makes throttle response more aggressive. Turning up the know adds a bit more growl to your driving, but it's not actually activating some extra exhaust valve or anything.

If you leave the knob alone the NX has a subdued exhaust note. Turning it up a bit gives you an extra layer of growl on top of that.

People have been asking, "Why a dial and not a button?" I mean, who is going to turn it up half way?

It's an odd feature IMO. But what do you think of the ASC dial?

Sounds like a waste of engineering time to me.

Are you sure its the ASC knob that " tightens suspension and makes throttle response more aggressive"? Because that sounds an awful like what the sport button does...

Now the exhaust note sounds right to fall in the jurisdiction of "active sound control"

X2. Stupidity at its best IMO. But this trickery has become commonplace among lux makers.

What I find funny about piping sound into the cabin is that a true petrol head is the only one who would clamour for MOAR engine sounds right, but the enthusiast is also the only one who really knows and is offended by the fake.

So its been faked to please the only people who would know its fake...

Value of image over value of object... But maybe most people just don't care?

Wouldn't it be more authentic to actually make an engine that sounds good or an exhaust that sounds good?

But then again, Toyota (and others) only reserve that kind of stuff to $400,000 cars....

It's because Lexus has done such a good job at making the interior so quiet they decided the new young buyers might want to hear the engine noise more while keeping it a luxury cabin feel for the rest of us.

It's just a separate speaker, has nothing to do with engine controls.

Authentic and probably cheaper, but that's too straight forward. Its completely circular if you ask me. People wanted ZERO road noise, so the makers went and gave that to them, then because of the GOBS of sound deadening the exhaust is no longer heard and people turned around and said, you know we would still LIKE to hear the motor don't ya know.

Lo and behold here we are today...

I would get the appeal of such a gadget on a hybrid, but not on a regular engine.
